Allseas contracts MacArtney to develop electric LARS systems for ROV operations

Dutch offshore contractor Allseas has commissioned MacArtney to provide advanced all-electric launch and recovery systems (eLARS) to enhance its remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operations.

This move is aimed at replacing Allseas’ three existing hydraulic launch and recovery systems with MacArtney’s over-the-side 150kN all-electric A-frames, including docking head and Active Heave Compensation (AHC) winch.

These systems are designed for a new fleet of electric ROVs used in survey and construction tasks in water depths of between 4km and 6km.

Allseas plans to install one of the systems on the Pioneering Spirit offshore construction vessel, and the others on the pipelay vessels Solitaire and Lorelay.

eLARS is designed to offer elevated deck deployment, improved safety for personnel and equipment, and recovery redundancy from maximum operational levels, fully complying with Allseas’ standards, stated MacArtney.

The system’s advanced technologies ensure reliability, with a minimal environmental impact, enhanced efficiency, real-time diagnostics, automated launch and recovery, and upgradable intelligent control systems.

The eLARS system’s design also optimises deck space and promotes eco-friendly practices by preventing oil contamination in aquatic environments.

The system is operable from shore, which reduces the need for crew members onboard and decreases crew exchange expenses.

Furthermore, the system features high redundancy and smart self-evaluation for preventive maintenance, “reducing costs by up to 50%” when compared to hydraulic systems.

In addition to facilitating online troubleshooting, these capabilities minimise downtime and optimise resource utilisation, thereby enhancing planning and scheduling.

In 2023, MacArtney delivered the eLARS to Belgium-based Jan De Nul for their offshore support vessel Symphony and the recently developed cable trencher Swordfish.
