Buried beneath the ground of a park in South Devon sits the remains of a German submarine dating back to the First World War.

The military submarine vessel has been under the soil of Coronation Park in Dartmouth, since the 1920’s the Dartmouth Museum confirms.

Curator and ex-Chairman of Dartmouth Museum, David Lingard said: ”A motor torpedo boat is believed to be down there as well.

”According to a resident who was a youngster at the time, it is understood that young boys used to play in the submarine.

”One of them got stuck inside a torpedo tube and they were unable to get him out and he drowned.

 

”In the end it was cut up in order to stop a similar incident taking place in the future.

”There is no other records to my knowledge of the incident, just the statement of the resident who was there. So it was first-hand really to confirm that.”

Although there has been speculation as to whether or not the U-boat legend is fact or fiction, David Lingard has confirmed that it is not a legend and it really does lie beneath the park.

Coronation Park within the town was first established back in 1928.
