William and Kate meet Barrow submarine crew

THE Duke of Cambridge and wife Kate were invited to BAE Systems in William’s capacity as Commodore-in-Chief of Submarines.

During their visit, the couple were given a tour of Devonshire Dock Hall where the Astute-class submarines are under construction.

Alan Dunn, operations director, walked alongside Prince William as they peered down at boat three, Artful, which will be officially named and rolled out of DDH later this year, and boat four, Audacious, which is in the advanced stages of outfit and unit combination.

Kate walked with Colin Torney, marine engineer officer on Artful, and Rear Admiral Simon Lister, director of submarines, before the couple greeted employees and their families on the shop floor.

The Duke and Duchess were later introduced to the crew of Artful, who are now based in Barrow, and their families in the Crew Accommodation Building.
John Hudson, managing director of BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines, said during the visit: “It’s fantastic. We’re privileged to have the royal couple here and delighted to be able to host them.

“As soon as the announcement was made, there was a real buzz and people were really interested to know what was happening and how they would be able to join in.

“Everyone has been very excited about the visit.”
